Today I was in Bangalore and Jayati was with me. At around 3:30 PM in afternoon we decided to visit Devanahalli, 30 Kms from Bangalore. This is also site for new Bengaluru International Airport, which is also second largest airport in India.
Jayati asked me – “Do you know why I bring you to this place?”
I said – No, I don’t know
Ani! This place is famous for three things.
One – “This is birth place of Tipu Sultan.”
Two – “This place is famous for Silk.” And
Three – “Here I will show you, how Solar Based LED lighting is empowering poor people to run their businesses without dependence on fuel based products for lighting.”
Tipu Sultan was born in Devanahalli in 1750 AD. As one reaches the town from Bangalore, one finds a scant signboard and a stone tablet surrounded by fields proclaiming the birthplace of Tipu.
Jayati took me to one silk manufacturing unit. There we met Shrikanto, who was owner of that small unit. He told us that few years back they where not able to work in nights and due to which there was not enough production or output. Thanks to SELCO Solar Pvt. Ltd who are providing sustainable energy solutions and services to underserved households and businesses. This sustainable energy solution is in the form of solar based LED (Light emitting diode), which converts sunlight into electricity.
To know more about this we visited SELCO office at J P Nagar in Bangalore. There we met Mr. Ashis Kumar Sahoo, Chief Operating Officer. He informed us that so far they have served over 1 Lac household in last 14 years and plan to double that number in the next 4-5 years. Their target market is typically household that earns Rs 2,000 to 4,000 a month or, in the case of farmers, those with annual cash flow of Rs. 40,000 per annum. SELCO also facilitates third party finances, install, services and designs solutions based on customer needs.
Almost half of the country’s households have no connection to a grid for electricity. Millions of Indians have little choice: it’s either kerosene lighting solution or solar power. Yet, cost reduction measures coupled with innovative financing options on such lighting products are need of the day.
