While much of south-west of India is surging towards development, prosperity, health and full literacy, Bihar is dragging the north of the country back toward the middle ages.
One of the state’s few really profitable industries is the manufacture as counterfeit pharmaceuticals – salt pills dressed as ASPIRINS, sugar tablets as ANTIBIOTICS. Recently an enterprising Bihari counterfeiter expanded his operations to include the manufacture of great quantities of fake chalk-based toothpaste called COLFATE.
Despite exceptionally rich mineral deposits and fertile soil, the state remains poorest in India.
